Latest News
Ever since the AOIRcamp idea was shared with the rest of the AIR-listserv, I’ve received correspondence from several interested parties. The most important thread was understandably about competing events.

The purpose of AOIRcamp is to provide a choice for folks who prefer to craft their own activities, in an informal and commercial-free setting (emergent + participatory). That said, I think it would be premature to say that AOIRcamp will offer competition to existing programs. I see it more as having a complimentary relationship, since those of us who originally won't be attending such events could still get together and produce (e.g. rather than to wander the Brisbane streets alone, we could wander together).

Scaling down, I'd like to try and have the meetup in a public space. For the benefit of those who can't be there, anything we talk about should be shared online via blogs and wikis (w/ real-time skype conference if possible). Using freely available tools to accomplish all this would be super. Things might not go as planned, but that's the beauty of it. For now, someone suggested meeting at the Queen Street Mall since they have ample outdoor space and possibly free wifi.

If you're interested, please join in the discussion at AOIRcamp@googlegroups.com

Tentative Plans for next year's AOIRcamp

Are you attending?

What is AOIRcamp?
AOIRcamp is planned to be an afterhours un-conference on Sept 28th and/or 29th, 6pm onwards. This "emergent" event is meant as an alternative to the other conference events (e.g. $42 conference dinner). AOIRcamp is based on BarCamp, which is an ad-hoc un-conference movement born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos and interaction from attendees. NO SPECTATORS, ONLY PARTICIPANTS All attendees can give a demo, a session, or help with one. All presentions are scheduled the day they happen. Prepare in advance, but come early to get a slot on the wall. Presenters should try to ensure that notes/slides/audio/video of their presentations are published on the web for the benefit of all and those who can’t be present. Anyone with something to contribute or with the desire to learn is welcome and invited to join. To get an idea, see photos from BarCampNYC

What can I do at AOIRcamp?
You could do anything that would interest a group of people like ourselves. Several groupies can happen at the same time. Someone could create a slot on the wall to talk about building social networks, while another could take a slot to talk about subverting social networks. Gaming is also encouraged since it could inspire future research (e.g. Nintendo DS wifi gameing = ad-hoc architectures). If you don't wish to talk, you could be a sponsor. Even bringing pizza, drinks or whatever would be better than coming empty-handed.

Venue
We need a camping ground. Ideally with free WiFi and a comfortable large space. ideally, something like a conference room in Queensland University of Technology (*hint hint*).

Sponsors
The event itself is free, but we are looking to get sponsors for the venue, food, stationary, etc. If you're interested in sponsoring, email an AOIRcamp organizer.

Organizers
If you would like to contact, contribute or become an organizer, please edit this page, or email Kevin Lim at http://static.flickr.com/82/220823924_bed952776f_o.gif

Volunteers
Volunteers are needed for the following areas. If you are interested, please add your name below the corresponding heading. Also, if you would like to handle a specific task put that beside your name in parenthesis.

  • Session leaders: Responsible for making a casual presentation, spearheading their session and getting people together.
  • Operations: Will be responsible for setting up tables and chairs, posting signage, and greeting newcomers.
  • Logistics: Responsible for conference room arrangements, wifi setup, electrical distribution. Ideally someone from the venue.
  • Media: Responsible for blogging, podcasting, photographing or basically documenting the event. Use tag: aoircamp06

Task List
Here's the current list of stuff we need to take care of:

  • Venue: We need a place to camp. Can QUT sponsor a conference room?
  • Signage: Produced an event logo and makeshift signage. (Kevin Lim: I'll handle this)
  • Digital Projectors: Anyone?
  • Wifi network: Any networking geeks in case we run into problems?
  • Electrical Power: Bring powerstrips and extension cords?
  • Food and snacks: If you're not presenting anything, bring something for everyone to eat!
  • Stationary: Responsible for bringing lots of Sharpie markers and Post-it notes for dynamic interactions.
  • Promotion: Once the final date and location is set, that means local bloggers, podcasters, press.
